Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho has some growing up to do, according to teammate Emre Can after the 20-year-old England international was fined for breaching coronavirus restrictions in Germany to get his hair cut. Can called out his teammate on Saturday following the 1-0 win over Hertha Berlin. Can scored the game’s lone goal, and Sancho had the assist.
Sancho and teammate Manuel Akanji were both fined by the German league after photos came out of them having someone come to their homes to give haircuts with neither wearing person protective equipment.
“Jadon needs a little guidance. He’s a great boy, also off the pitch. It’s true that I get along very well with him,” Can told Sky Germany. “He just has to be a little bit smarter about these things. Everyone needs a hairdresser. He needs to grow up. He can’t afford to make mistakes like that in the future.”
Can sees it as his duty — and that of the other veterans on the team — to help guide Sancho.
“We as a team are also responsible. We are not annoyed by him. We know that he has to be more disciplined in some things,” Can said. “But he knows that too. I don’t think he does this on purpose to create a scandal. Maybe he doesn’t realize it, maybe he trusts too many people in some things.
“He needs people to guide him. That’s where the environment is very important.”
This doesn’t seem like anything that will cause any friction at Dortmund. Can appears to be trying to guide Sancho — a popular transfer target from big-name Premier League clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United — and teach him right from wrong, which can be tricky for a 20-year-old rising star experiencing new heights. At the end of the day, should you break the rules for a haircut? No.
But hey, at least he didn’t.
